Air cadets from all over South and West Yorkshire recently represented their Wing in the North Region Junior Netball and Rugby competitions.  The event sees the 6 Wings within North Region compete in the sporting competitions, with the best players being selected to represent the Region in future events.

Air Cadets and Staff from Askern Squadron recently attended the Inter Squadron Cross Country race, held at Pontefract race course.  The course was over 2 and a half miles, around the race track and various parts of the surrounding park.

Air Cadets from all over Sector 2, South and West Yorkshire Wing, came together at Goole TA Centre to take part in a joint weapons training event.  The event, run over 2 weekends, saw a number of cadets attend to take part in various weapons training and target shooting.

Cadet Sergeant Victoria Colwill (17), of Askern Air Cadets, has recently completed her Senior Non-Commissioned Officer training course at South and West Yorkshire Wing Headquarters.  The course aims to teach senior NCOs how to manage groups of Junior NCOs and other cadets, as well as build upon the skills taught in earlier courses.

2 Askern Air Cadets have recently completed their Junior Non-Commissioned Officer Course, held at South and West Yorkshire Wing Headquarters.  The course teaches the cadets various aspects of leadership, from communication to team management.

17 Air Cadets from across South and West Yorkshire came together for the North Region Air Cadet’s inter Wing swimming championships, in Oldham recently.  The cadets were all selected to represent South and West Yorkshire Wing in the event.  The event brings together Air Cadets from the 6 Wings in the North of England to compete to see which Wing is the overall winner.

South Yorkshire Air Cadets remember
Hundreds of South Yorkshire Air Cadets came together with veterans and dignitaries to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain with the annual parade in Sheffield. Led by a local brass band the parade held a short service at Sheffield City War Memorial before parading to the Cathedral. The final part of the day was a march past with the  salute being taken by Her Majesties Lord Lieutenant for South Yorkshire and the Lord Mayor.

Veterans and Cadets Mark 70th Anniversary of Battle of Britain.
Doncaster veterans of the Royal Air Force were joined by Air Cadets and other serving and former services personnel to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. September 15th 1940 is recognised as the turning point in the battle in which every RAF fighter was airborne at one stage and no reserves left. To mark the anniversary a poignant and moving sunset ceremony took place at the Memorial Gates outside the main terminal building at Robin Hood Airport, the former RAF Finningley.

 A brief meeting on Remembrance Sunday has lead to a formal affiliation between Askern Air Cadets and the Burgwallis branch of the Royal British Legion.  Askern Air Cadets normally parade at Bentley, but a request for help led to a contingent parading in Askern, which in turn lead to the chance meeting.

Out in the Open Wolds
The recent bank holiday provided Askern Air Cadets with the perfect opportunity to get out into the countryside, to complete a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Silver level expeditions in the Yorkshire Wolds. 3 cadets from Askern, one from Crowle and a fifth from Batley made up the team, who undertook the expedition.  The expedition saw the cadets undertake a 3 day venture, camping each night and carrying everything they needed for the event with them.  The cadets walked around 11 miles each day, exploring the Yorkshire Wolds, and camped overnight, cooking for themselves for the entire expedition.

Air Cadets from all over South and West Yorkshire recently teamed up for the North Region Inter Wing Athletics competition.  The competition is open to all Air Cadets Wings within North Region, an area which extends from the Humber in the east, the Mersey in the west and up to the Scottish boarders.

Local Askern Air Cadets got a surprise recently, when they were asked to step outside their building, as someone wanted to pay them a visit.  Much bemused, the cadets stood outside, looking for their visitor.  A few moments later, the South Yorkshire Police helicopter flew over.

8 local Askern Air Cadets recently attended RAF Church Fenton for the opportunity to fly in powered aircraft.  The flights allow the cadets to experience flight first hand and also put into practice what they have learnt in the classroom.  This was followed up by a visit to RAF Linton on Ouse, for the chance to go gliding as well.

Askern Air Cadets recently entered the South and West Yorkshire Wing drill competition, held at RAF Church Fenton.  The competition sees Air Cadet units from all over South and West Yorkshire come together to participate. The Askern team contained a lot of new cadets, some who have only been with the Squadron a few weeks.  Despite this and a reduced team, the cadets went to give it their all.

Army and Air Cadets came together at Goole TA Centre to take part in a joint weapons training event.  The weekend event saw a number of different cadets, from both the Army Cadet Force and the Air Training Crops, attend to take part in various weapons training and target shooting.  Unfortunately the Sea Cadet Corps were unable to attend and make it a full tri-service event.

Recently Air Cadets from Askern and Goole came together to complete their actual and practice expeditions for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.  The expedition required the cadets to plan and walk 20 miles over 2 days, while camping overnight.

Three Askern Air Cadets recently got the opportunity to attend RAF Syerston to go gliding.  The station houses 643 Volunteer Gliding Squadron, who teach cadets about gliding and train them up to go solo and beyond.  For Cadets Georgina Gregory (13) and Rebecca Wardle (13) this was their first flight.  For Cadet Alice Woodrow (15), it was a chance to build upon earlier experiences and take control herself

Six Askern Air Cadets Air Cadet recently completed a 7.5 mile hike around Wentworth, South Yorkshire.  The local cadets took part in the walk as part of their preparation for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions.

Local businessman and Ex-cadet, James Brunnell, recently made a generous donation of furniture and office equipment to Askern Air Cadet Squadron. Three Askern Air Cadets recently attended RAF Church Fenton, where they were given the opportunity to take control of a light aircraft and experience powered flight. Askern Air Cadets took part in the South and West Yorkshire Wing cross country competition, held at Barnsley Rugby club and Askern Air Cadet, Damien Stevens (16), was selected to represent South and West Yorkshire Wing in the North Region Senior Football competition

Goole and Askern Air Cadets recently paired up to undertake their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition. Over the recent bank holiday, the cadets met up to undertake a 2 day expedition around the Askern area. Working in 2 groups, the cadets had to navigate their way from a set start point to their camp site. They then camped overnight and then navigating their way to their pick up point the next day.

Askern Air Cadets recently got their first taste of flight.  4 cadets travelled to RAF Syerston to undertake their Glider Induction Training.  This gave the cadets their first flights in a Glider.  Two weeks later, more Askern Air cadets attended RAF Church Fenton, where they got their first taste of powered flight in the Tutor aircraft.

Cadets Get a Heart Start...

Air Cadets from Askern and Goole Squadrons recently came together to undertake Heartstart training.   The Heartstart course teaches the cadets basic emergency life support, such as CPR, how to deal with chokings, severe bleeding and what to do if you suspect someone is suffering from a heart attack.

Air Cadets meet for day of Fun and Sport

Air Cadets came together recently for the first Askern Squadron Field Day.  The event was open to all Squadrons within Sector 2 of South and West Yorkshire Wing and saw the cadets take part in 5-a-side football, volley ball, initiative exercises, air rifles shooting, tug of war and even ice cream eating, though the latter was a spontaneous event for the staff.

Goole Air Cadets, assisted by cadets and staff from Crowle and Askern Air Cadets, attend the Waddington International Air Show.  However this was not just a trip out to an Air Show for the cadets, who for the 15th year helped to run the “Douglas Bader” disabled person’s enclosure at the show.

Cadets from Goole and Askern Squadrons were bag packing at the Morrisons store in Knottingley on Friday the 19th December in the evening. Despite not being able to give the full day; they still managed to come away with £642.00 with only 10 cadets and 2 members of staff from Goole and Askern.

Cadets from 2357 (Goole) Squadron and 1384 (Askern) Squadron were out bag packing at the ASDA store in Hull at the end of Hessle Road recently. 10 cadets braved the day at the ASDA store and despite not being able to give the full day; they still managed to come away with just over £600.00.
